Your kids are watching you

Question. Who here loves confrontation? Anyone? Does anyone here enjoy an explosive argument complete with name-calling and blame-shifting? Anyone? How about gaslighting, is that your thing?

Confrontation sucks. I’d much rather remain quiet, and calm, and enjoy the birds singing outside my window. Or perhaps dangling my feet in the cool lake while resting on a dock with warm sunshine on my face—no people around to trouble me.

That kind of daydream is a lovely thing. But so is my family. Without them to spice up my life I would miss out on so much joy, love, and adventure.

I wish I could join the two things together. I’d be in paradise. I’d have you and your family over to join us for a cookout and a few beers. We’d sit around the fire pit at night and share funny stories from family road trips and dinner-time shenanigans. We’d laugh as our kids rolled their eyes at us and stuffed their faces with s’mores.

But the hard reality is that our lives are filled with tension and problems to solve, unmet needs, and unrealistic expectations. We walk around grumbling and…
